John was a generous warm hearted host with a great sense of humour.

Together with the Freemantle family we sat waiting in the square of a small town in the Dordogne, patiently waiting for our meal. The harassed waiter approached our table apologising profusely, "Il n'y a plus de gésiers" he said. All four children expressed horror then relief. What had we ordered? After that John often teased "No gizzards today!".

We will always remember John and Carole's genuine hospitality.
